Soaring Fuel Prices Bring Out A New Breed of Phony Fuel Savers

Synopsis

Rocketing fuel prices have motorists hunting for ways to relieve agony at the pump. Could that be why there is a wave of sales pitches for so-called fuel saving devices.
Buyer Beware! Consumer advocates warn consumers to beware of these scams.

Warning! Few, if any of these devices actually work. Gas saving scams and scammers have been around almost as long as the automobile. And there’s an inevitable surge in them anytime gas prices rise.

These scammers now have a new medium and front for attack, the Internet. They are anonymous and here today and gone tomorrow, leaving you with no way to reclaim your losses.

Have you gotten your offering yet? An email offering to show you how to shave 70 cents off the price of a gallon of gasoline has been making the rounds. Just wait, if you haven’t seen it in your mailbox yet. McCaffee, a vendor of security software, says that 0.2% of all spam emails concerns the cost of gas.

That figure will almost certainly go up with the cost of gas. Many of the so-called gas savers being advertised claim they can give you fuel savings ranging from 12% to 25%.

It is reported that the Environmental Protection Agency, an arm of the federal government charged with monitoring fuel efficiency, says it has tested thousands of advertised products and never found one that produced the claimed results. (Nothing is said for the products that are advertised commercially.)

You will not find the EPA or any other government agency endorsing any so-called gas saver. But that doesn’t stop the sellers of the phony fuel savers from claiming that they have government endorsement.

However, it is my contention that government does not want the devices that do work on the market. And have deliberately prevented many innovative devices that do work from being marketed.

Keep in mind that the sellers of these phony gas savers are trying to take advantage of the public’s inclination to believe “they couldn’t say that if it wasn’t true”. That’s why their advertising often features convincing testimonials from satisfied customers. No doubt these drivers believe what they’re saying. It’s unlikely any of them posses the equipment to accurately test the effectiveness of the products their touting.

(It is my belief that after installing most would be gas saving devices many of these users are much more conscious of their driving habits and is actually practicing Hypermiling techniques.)

When trained testers with the necessary equipment put these products to the test, the promised results seldom pan out. You should contact the seller for a refund if the promised results are not forthcoming. If these businesses are legitimate you will have no trouble getting a refund.

If you are not unsuccessful, contact the office of your state’s attorney general and ask to file a consumer complaint.

Some of these devices are offered for prices ranging in price from $20 to over $200.. No matter what the price, when the products don’t work it’s money down the drain.

With so many of your hard earned dollars going into your gas tank, it would be a shame to waste even a little bit on phony gas savers.

Do your homework before buying into any purported gas saving device. Despite what the media tells you SOME of these devices are efficient at what they report to do. They can and do save the user money.

However, most of your gas saving will come from tried and true common sense tips and tactics. Remember, with the advent of the Internet, information is available at your fingertips like never before.

Look for forums that discuss the item of your interest and see what those users have to say about it. You will probably gather more truth there than from any governmental agency or the news media. In the end, saving gas and your money is your responsibility. ----------
