Oxygen Sensor- Fuel Saving Device or No

Synopsis

Faulty oxygen sensors can affect getting better gas mileage. They should be checked and replaced as needed or on a regular schedule.

A Fuel Saving Device That Might be Forgotten

Oxygen sensors are not thought of as fuel saving device. Or for that usually thought about at all until the CHECK ENGINE SOON light flashes on. And to the average driver that means little to them. All too often the average driver will ignore that little bitty warning light and just keep right on driving. Not a good idea.

I have to admit that I have been guilty of ignoring that light myself. However, there are times things need fixing when the light does not come on. And it can really affect the gas mileage big time. One of those things that can use a changing, just like oil or tires is the O2 or oxygen sensor. This is how I was able to improve my gas mileage by 60% or more. After reading my story about O2 sensors you might think differently about O2 sensors being a gas saving device.

On that occasion I was driving an older 1992 Chevy S-10, six banger. It had 234,000+ miles and it was abused, a lot, before I came to use it.

I was on one of those long marathon runs of 1200 miles, one way. I was short on funds, so I figured my expenses to the dollar for the trip.  I computed the mpg to be about 22 mpg and allowed for funds to cover 3000 miles.

I left off on my run about sundown one evening.  I soon learned, to my dismay that I was not getting 22 mpg. I was not even getting 20 mpg.  I was averaging about 14 mpg.  Not good.  Not good at all. I did some quick math and figured I would be out of gas money about half way home. I was in trouble. I could either find the problem and fix it or abandon the trip all together and go home. Defeated.

Early the next morning I found a Napa auto store. I bought an oxygen sensor for about $50. More than I had expected.  Now I had that expense to cover as well as the loss of the gas mileage I had not counted on. Not a good place to be when 500 miles from home and 2500 more to roam.

After replacing the O2 sensor, in the Napa parking lot, I was off again.

I refueled before leaving town. With the first tank was able to improve my gas mileage to 26 mpg.  Almost doubling the mileage. Long story short. I made the trip in fine shape because of better gas mileage, arriving home with about 20 cents to my name and a nearly out of gas S-10.

Had I not changed the sensor I would never had made it and never would known how very important it is to change out this little bit of news every now and then. It is standard procedure for me to change every O2 sensor on every vehicle every 50,000 miles to ensure I improve my gas mileage.

O2 sensors can become contaminated because of air leaks and other causes, making the engine run rich (producing carbon). Keep that exhaust system in tip top shape for maximum savings. You may or may not see the same saving I realized, but you will be off for it. Just maybe you to will get much better gas mileage and discover just what a fuel saving device an O2 can be.
