I drove a little 71 Chevy pickup ½ ton with a little 307 V8. It loved to run and loved to let it. It would run to it did if I did not keep my eye on the speedometer. It would inch up to 80 mph in no time if I was not paying attention to business. Not an exact remedy for getting better gas mileage.
My mpg was not too hot at that pace, to say the least. Not bad though at about 16 mpg. Today day I made a conscious effort to keep my foot out of it and see if I could not improve my gas mileage.
Yah, it slid up there a couple of times, but mostly I kept my speed at a modest 60 mph. (Man that was hard to do.) And I also got a very modest improvement in my gas mileage. About 30% or just a bit under. As I recall the mpg came in about 24 or 25 miles per gallon. I could live with that. Now days that would equate to a dollar a gallon or more. Is that worth slowing down to 55 or 60 MPH to get better gas mileage?
I think almost everyone would like to get better gas mileage. Except the Hot Rodding cowboys running up and down the street in front of my house. They make a turn right here and it suddenly becomes open season for punching their pickups in the ass. The cops would have a heyday here issuing tickets for acceleration exhibition. Wouldn't that be nice top off for gas that is already climbing over $4 a gallon?
Here is a tip for you guys that run pickups. Rumor has it if you lower your tailgate your miles per gallon will go up. Tests have proven just the opposite. Keep that gate up boys and girls. Or better yet, test it out for yourself and see if you get better gas mileage or no.
The real moral of the story for better gas mileage is to keep your foot out of it.
