Avoid Chigger Bites By Avoiding Chigger Hot Spots
If you like being outdoors in the summer time chances are you will run into a chigger or three before you are finished. Chigger are pretty sociable critters. if you have not been bit yet it only means you have not been introduced. I don't know if there is a formal kind of introduction or not.However, chiggers are like people. They like to hang out with their own kind so they form little communities known as colonies.
It is possible to locate some of these colonies if you a piece of black paper is laid on the ground in various locations. If there is chiggers in the ares they will climb on the paper. Chiggers like dark colored things and they also like things human. They will be the little red spots on the paper. But these are not the ones you looking for. The one you want to be on the look out for are much smaller and probably already crawling up your pant leg.
They also like to hang out where the grass is tall and bushes are thick. The like it where is warm and moist and dark. Thus the more heavily wooded areas with rotting wood and leaves are the best place to find chiggers if you should feel the urge to go hunting them.
If you truly do not want go hunting chiggers or for chiggers to find you then try these tips.
When hiking stick to trails and avoid wading into areas where grass is tall and plentiful.
When selecting a camp site, look for a place clear of brush and grass as much as possible. Sunshine should be plentiful as should the free movement of air.
Clear the area and push or rake the small stuff to the area where the campfire is to be built. Spray the area with an insect repellent. If wish to go natural make your own repellent before leaving home.
Use 4 tablespoons of dish soap and 4 teaspoons of vegetable oil per gallon of water or diluted Safe Solutions, Inc. Enzyme Cleaner with Peppermint (1 - 2 oz. per gallon of water).
Spray chigger repellent around the tent openings to help control chigger bites.
