Are High Fuel Prices Making You See Red? It Could Cost You Dearly at the Pump!

Synopsis

If you take that anger out behind the wheel, you could actually end up spending even more on gasoline.
Are you seeing scarlet about the soaring cost of gas?

Driving tests done by the popular automotive site Edmunds.com showed that aggressive drivers engage in driving habits that waste fuel. Such stunts as speeding, stop and go driving, and racing up to red lights, then slamming on the skids are huge wasters of fuel.

Whenever you touch either the brake or gas pedal, the fuel in your gas tank turns into heat energy.

Rapid acceleration fills the engine with extra gas, causing the car to burn excess fuel.

Riding the brakes causes the vehicle to waste the energy used to get it up to speed.

Rapid braking and acceleration can waste up to 20% of your expensive fuel.

By the same token, speeding uses more energy than driving at a slower, constant speed.

All this means that aggressive, angry drivers that tailgate, speed and brake hard will be penalized at the gas pump when they have to fill-up.

Calmer drivers that maintain a steady cruising speed and avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration use about 20% less fuel.

Most motorists don’t realize how much money their aggressive driving habits may be costing them.

A new study in Denver, Colorado is betting that drivers will be making some changes in driving habits when they see the connection of bad driving behavior with high fuel bills. The study places a device in volunteer’s vehicles that record every every too-fast turn around a corner, every hard brake and fast start.

Monitors in the cars give drivers real-time feedback on how they’re doing. The study will determine whether or not drivers who see actual evidence of driving habits will be motivated to change.

A new breed of drivers known as “hypermiler” are embracing the idea of real-time monitoring of fuel consumption.

Hypermilers try to squeeze every last of efficiency out of the fuel they burn. They typically drive with computers that give them instant feedback on modifications to their driving habits as well as their vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

The study, is aimed at finding ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by altering driving habits. But because aggressive drivers are one of the leading causes of accidents, it’s hoped that motivating them to change will pay back benefits in reduced deaths and accidents, as well. ----------
