What does gas station sign say at your favorite station?

Does the message scream higher gas prices from every corner? Gas prices are at an all-time high and it does not appear any relief is on the horizon.

Sadly, the experts are reporting it could get worse and that's why drivers in mass are looking for ways to get better gas mileage. Outdated myths are filling the airwaves and Internet.

A television news station has advised motorists to fill up their gas tanks in the morning when gas condensed from cool night temperatures. This advice may have been true once.

  • Gas stations now store fuel below ground in 30,000-gallon tanks. That means gas temperatures and volumes do not fluctuate with daily cycles.
  • Most fuel-line gadgets that supposedly help save on gas simply do not work. These devices have all been tested by the EPA, which found the only thing these devices reduced was the amount of cash in drivers wallets.
With a long-term oil shortages looming ahead, there are plenty of private industries that have good reason to want to help you save on gas.

Here are ten tips that will really help you save gas:
  • Keep your tires properly inflated according to the tire specifications. Under inflated tires wastes gas.
  • Don't be an aggressive driver. Jackrabbit starts, screeching stops and speeding can lower your gas mileage by 5% on city streets.
  • Idling your engine for 15 minutes wastes one gallon of gas. Schedule driving times to eliminate parking at traffic lights. Reduce the amount of time you let your car warm up.
  • Slow down. Higher speeds decreases efficiency and increases fuel consumption, and cost. 55 mph is the most efficient speed on highways. Drive above 60 and the cost of gas starts climbing and fast.
  • Get rid of excess weight. Removing an extra 100 pounds from your car will increase your fuel efficiency by as much as 2%.
  • Unless the manufacturer specifies it, do not use premium fuel. Check with two or three dealerships just to make sure of getting good advice.
  • Replacing a faulty oxygen sensor can save you as $16.00 on a typical vehicle.
  • Make sure your air filter is clean. Don't just blindly follow some predetermined schedule for putting in a new filter. Driving on dirt roads will pollute the air filter a lot faster than you realize.
  • Check the filters most often forgotten. Think to check on the fuel filter, and the breather filter. Replacing these “forgotten” filters every 12,000 miles can help improve your gas savings by up to 15 percent.
  • Get a new gas cap with a lock. As gas fumes expand in your tank, they can escape past a faulty seal and waste precious gas. Some studies suggest you can save as much as 17 gallons of gas a year just by replacing an old gas cap. And consider making that new gas cap a locking model because sadly, as gas prices go up, so do gas thefts. ----------
